Tremors Q & A

What is Essential Tremor?

Essential tremor is the most common cause of tremors. People who have this type of movement disorder shake involuntarily. The areas that the tremors are typically most noticeable are the hands, the head, and for some people the voice. Essential tremor does not shorten the life expectancy, however it can make life very difficult for the patient at times. A person with essential tremor may eventually need to have help with basic activities of daily living, for example feeding themselves or brushing their hair.

What is Parkinson's Disease?

Parkinson's disease is a movement disorder, separate from essential tremor but sharing many of the same features. A person with Parkinson's disease may have tremors, rigid muscles, and problems with moving easily. People who have Parkinson's disease don't have enough of the brain neurotransmitter dopamine, and the basal ganglia within their brain has started to degenerate. People with Parkinson's disease may have obvious tremors in the hands, arms, head, and voice.

Can Parkinson's Be Cured?

While research continues, at the current time there is no known cure for Parkinson's disease. There is growing hope that the causes of Parkinson's disease can soon be identified, which may allow for a cure or for even more effective treatments than those currently available. While there is not a cure, there are many ways to improve quality of life for a Parkinson's patient. It is very important that patients who suffer from Parkinson's disease or from essential tremor see an experienced neurologist. The neurologist can identify each specific symptom and map out a customized course of treatment. People who have essential tremor or Parkinson's disease can live a complete and fulfilling life if they pursue treatment that is targeted to their specific symptoms with the help of an experienced doctor of neurology.
